ABC Renews Grey's Anatomy, 9-1-1, Shifting Gears, Will Trent & The Rookie

ABC has made some renewal announcements Thursday afternoon. New comedy Shifting Gears which stars Kat Dennings and Tim Allen has been renewed (10 episodes) for a second season. Unfortunately, Doctor Odyssey has not been renewed, nor canceled. However, it does not look good for the Joshua Jackson led series.

Back to the good news! ABC has also renewed 9-1-1, Grey’s Anatomy, The Rookie and Will Trent. High Potential and Abbott Elementary were renewed earlier.

Shifting Gears came in strong with the pilot episode gaining almost 17 million viewers over its first week for ABC’s biggest new series launch. Fans tuned in across live viewing and online as well as streaming apps (via Hulu). However, what took a minute for the network to renew the series was the consistent ratings decline. There was a 40% in linear viewership and 50% in adults 18-49 drop over the season according to Deadline.

What saved the show? Most likely the relationship Disney has with Tim Allen aka Buzz Lightyear from the Toy Story franchise. It is worth mentioning that the network does not have many comedies. Abbott Elementary would be the last man standing (see what we did there) if Shifting Gears was not renewed.

As far as Doctor Odyssey goes, we can see why ABC is still determining the fate of the series. Set on a cruise ship, the series follows the crew and passengers of a luxury liner. While the show looks glamorous and has had big named special guest stars like John Stamos, Shania Twain and most recently Angela Bassett (in a 9-1-1 crossover event) according to sources, it is expensive to make and the ratings are mid. Even Angela Bassett could not save what is a bore of a drama (in our opinion).

We do have some critics on the site that enjoy the show. When I same some, I mean the one that reviews it weekly.

Should ABC not renew Doctor Odyssey, Ryan Murphy does not have to fret as the network has already greenlit another 9-1-1

spinoff starring Chris O’Donnell set in Nashville.
